China Telecom and Ericsson collaborate on small cells

Ericsson has announced its Radio Dot small cells have been used by China Telecom to boost indoor LTE coverage in Zhejiang and Guangdong.

This is apparently the first implementation of its kind in mainland China and is a case study for Ericsson’s extensive investment in small cells specifically designed for boosting indoor mobile broadband coverage. The Radio Dot system was first announced back in 2013 and Ericsson is keen to demonstrate its commercial viability as well as showing off the achievement of 20MHz (1.8GHz) + 20MHz (2.1GHz) carrier aggregation.

“We have received very good feedback from China Telecom on the Ericsson Radio Dot System’s excellent performance, ease of deployment and cost-efficiency,” said Chris Houghton, Head North East Asia at Ericsson. “Ericsson will continue to assist China Telecom and other operators in the country with innovative solutions to provide the best network coverage and speed.”

Within China Ericsson also recently announced its involvement in phase 3 of China Mobile’s 4G network roll out. “We are honoured to be able to continue our contribution to China Mobile’s ongoing efforts to build the largest 4G network in the world,” said Houghton. “Ericsson is committed to spearheading the continuous evolution of the Networked Society. We are willing to join hands with China Mobile to promote a smooth upgrade of 4G, TDD technology in particular, to 5G.”

Elsewhere Telenor Sweden has picked Ericsson to upgrade its network in order to enable VoLTE and wifi calling. “Telenor’s choice of Ericsson as sole supplier is a strong signal of confidence in our ability to deliver comprehensive solutions that satisfy customers in a fast-changing marketplace,” said Charlotta Sund, Head of Ericsson Northern Europe and Central Asia.
