NTT Communications revealed on Tuesday that it has acquired an 86.7% stake in German data centre operator e-shelter.

The deal substantially increases the Japan-based telco's presence in Europe's data centre market to 92,000 square metres in nine cities from 19,500 square metres in four cities.

"Going forward, NTT Com will continue to expand its data centres to offer strengthened global seamless ICT solutions that meet the needs of corporate customers on the European continent, where the demand for data centres continues to grow," said NTT Com, in a statement.

The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Established in 2000, e-shelter operates Europe's largest data centre: a 40,000 square metre facility in Frankfurt. It also owns data centres in Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich, as well as Vienna, Austria, and Zurich, Switzerland.

E-shelter's clients include financial services providers, telcos, governmental institutions and cloud services providers, among others.

NTT Com has made a string of acquisitions in recent years in order to ramp up its global cloud infrastructure, snapping up data centre operators in the U.S., Thailand and now Germany. It also acquired virtual network services provider Virtela and French collaboration services specialist Arkadin.
