Huawei has acquired U.K.-based Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity specialist Neul.

The deal closed late last week, a spokesperson for Huawei told Total Telecom on Monday. The Chinese heavyweight has not officially shared the value of the deal, but we understand it to be around $25 million.

Huawei made the acquisition because the work Neul has done in the IoT space.

"It's an area we want to increase our expertise in," the spokesman said. As such, Neul is "a good fit".

Cambridge-headquartered Neul will continue to operate under its own brand and will retain its existing staff, Huawei said.

Neul is effectively an IoT research and development facility. It has been a core contributor to the open standard Weightless wireless WAN technology designed specifically for the IoT market.

"Huawei is delighted to have acquired Neul and its ground-breaking innovations in the IoT [space]," the Chinese vendor said in a pre-prepared statement.

"Huawei has no doubt that the IoT market offers huge scope to expand and to deliver important new services and solutions to the customers."
