Google Fiber extends Provo, Utah, fiber broadband sign-up through September

Google Fiber (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced that it's going to extend the sign-up process for residents who want its fiber to the home (FTTH) service in Provo, Utah, through September.

Under Google's plan, customers can get a fiber connection, plus an Internet plan, for $30.

It can offer the service for $30 because unlike its Kansas City market, where it had to build its network from the ground up, it is leveraging the existing iProvo network. Provo became the second city besides Kansas City where it offers the service.

However, it appears that if eligible residents miss the September deadline, Google Fiber is going to raise the installation fee.

"This is the last chance to get Fiber for $30 — after this wave of sign-ups and installations, our construction fee will probably be closer to the same $300 that we charge in Kansas City," wrote John Richards, head of Operations for Google Fiber in Provo, in a blog post.

Besides Provo, Google Fiber is talking with 34 other cities about deploying service, while other cities like San Antonio, Texas, have reached a preliminary agreement. However, none of these cities will find out if they were selected or not until either the end of this year or next year.
